21 Icons and SABC3 celebrated the birthday of South Africa’s freedom with the broadcast premiere of the documentary 21 Icons: A Journey to Democracy on April 27 2014. The documentary shares the story of South Africa’s turbulent past, the apartheid years, and reflects the spirit of a nation – the promise of the future.

In the film 21 iconic South Africans discuss the divisive nature of the early days, the pain and loss of living in exile, the hardships brought on by being in the underground struggle, and their passion and determination to fight for a free and just South Africa. The narrative unpacks the struggles that still prevail, the work that needs to be done and the reasons why the country will succeed in honouring the legacy of Nelson Mandela.
