A Traditionalist:
Grace
Masuku
"It's so important to preserve nature, and there's something about it; the more you preserve, the more you learn about nature, the better you become."

Profile of an Icon
Grace Masuku
Grace Masuku is everyone's grandmother. Her mischievous grin, her childlike spirit, means that in her eighties, her presence has yet to dim. She radiates an undeniable energy when she speaks. That vitality is important, because Masuku represents a part of South Africa that many have forgotten. Renowned for her deep knowledge of Tswana traditional and cultural values, she is driven by a respect and reverence for her people and environment that has resulted in a remarkable life.

Grace Masuku
Educationist, conservationist and environmentalist Grace Masuku shares with filmmaker and photographer Adrian Steirn the early influences that shaped her understanding of the importance of nature, and how man cannot live separately from the land. She also explains how this interconnectedness extends to create a web of community, and discusses her philosophy that true happiness is simply accepting these connections, and your own role within them.

A Portrait
A series of behind the scenes images reflecting the 21 icons team at work.
Reflecting the essence of Masuku's iconism: she is rising from the roots of a tree, of this earth, serving humanity through the preservation and mindful harvest of its bounty.
